The Three-Stage Selection Process

Recruitment happens in stages: a Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Physical Efficiency Test. Candidates must clear each stage to proceed to the next.

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination

This is a fully objective, multiple-choice exam. You get 2 hours to answer 100 questions, each worth 2 marks, for a total of 200 marks. Subjects include English, General Knowledge, Hindi Language Knowledge, Reasoning, and Current Affairs. There is no negative marking mentioned for this stage.

The qualifying threshold is 30% of the marks. Candidates scoring below 30% are eliminated immediately. Roughly ten times the number of vacancies will be shortlisted category-wise for the Main Examination, though this ratio may be adjusted downward if sufficient qualified candidates are not available. If application numbers are very high, multiple shifts may be conducted, and scores will be normalized using the Equi-Percentile Method.

Stage 2: Main Examination

The Main Exam consists of two papers.

Paper 1 (Objective): 3 hours, 200 questions, 200 marks. Each correct answer earns 1 mark; each incorrect answer deducts 0.25 marks. Subjects and marks are:

  • General Studies and Current Affairs – 50 marks
  • Mathematics and Quantitative Aptitude – 40 marks
  • Reasoning and Analytical Ability – 40 marks
  • English Language – 20 marks
  • Hindi Language – 20 marks
  • General Knowledge of Bihar – 30 marks

Paper 2 (Subjective/Descriptive): 1 hour, 50 marks. This includes a Hindi Essay (15 marks), English Essay (15 marks), English Précis (10 marks), and Hindi-to-English Translation (10 marks).

You must score at least 30% in both papers to remain eligible. Candidates equal to three times the number of vacancies will be shortlisted category-wise on merit for the Physical Efficiency Test. This ratio may also be reduced if enough qualified candidates are not available.

Stage 3: Physical Efficiency Test

This stage simply verifies that you meet the height, chest, and weight standards listed above. No marks are awarded. You either qualify or are declared unsuccessful.

How the Final Merit List Is Prepared

The final list is based strictly on marks obtained in the Main Written Examination, category-wise. In case of a tie, the following order applies:

  1. The older candidate gets preference
  2. If still tied, the candidate with higher educational qualification
  3. If still tied, candidates are ranked according to Hindi alphabetical order of their name as per the 10th board certificate

Selected candidates' names are then sent by BPSSC to the Deputy Inspector General of Police (Special Branch), who is the appointing authority.

Vacancy Breakdown Across Categories

Out of 150 total posts, vacancies are distributed as follows:

Category Total Posts
Unreserved 60
EWS (Economically Weaker Section) 15
Extremely Backward Class (EBC) 27
Scheduled Caste (SC) 24
Backward Class (BC) 18
Backward Class – Women (separate quota) 04
Scheduled Tribe (ST) 02

Reservation is applied as per the Bihar Reservation Act 1991 (as amended). A 35% horizontal reservation for women applies within each category, though this applies to Bihar domicile women only. Backward Class women retain a separate 3% reservation. Additionally, 2% horizontal reservation applies for descendants of pensioned freedom fighters.

EWS candidates must submit an income and asset certificate based on financial year 2025-26, valid for one year from issue.

Application Fee and Payment

The application fee is Rs. 100 for all candidates, regardless of category or gender. Payment is accepted only through net banking, credit/debit card, or UPI. Bank charges are borne by the applicant. The fee is non-refundable except in cases of technical failure during payment, where the amount will be refunded within 7 working days.

How to Apply Online

Applications are submitted in two parts. In the first part, you provide basic registration details: name, nationality, mobile number, email address, domicile, reservation category, gender, and date of birth. You then proceed to payment. In the second part, you enter details of parents, address, and educational qualification, and upload a recent color photograph and signature meeting the specified size and background requirements.

Only one application is permitted per candidate and per mobile number. Multiple applications will lead to rejection of all of them. No extension will be granted to the application deadline under any circumstance. Applications sent by post will not be entertained.
