Selection Process for Assam Civil Service (APSC CCE 2026)

The Assam Public Service Commission (APSC) conducts the Combined Competitive Examination (CCE) in two successive stages to select eligible candidates. Below is the complete step-by-step breakdown of the selection procedure:

Stage 1: Preliminary Examination (Screening Test)

The Preliminary Exam is the first stage and consists of two objective-type (Multiple Choice Questions) papers. This exam acts strictly as a screening test; marks obtained here are not counted toward the final merit list.

  • Paper-I (General Studies I): 200 Marks (2 Hours duration).
  • Paper-II (General Studies II): 200 Marks (2 Hours duration). This paper is purely qualifying in nature, and candidates must secure a minimum of 33% marks to pass.

Negative Marking: There is a penalty for wrong answers. One-fourth (1/4th) of the total marks assigned to a question will be deducted for every incorrect answer marked by the candidate.

Stage 2: Main Examination (Written Test & Interview)

Candidates numbering 11 to 12 times the total number of vacancies will be shortlisted for the Main Examination based on their Prelims performance. This final stage is divided into two parts:

A. Written Examination The written test evaluates candidates through six conventional essay-type papers with a prescribed word limit.

  • Paper-1 (Essay): 250 Marks (3 Hours duration).
  • Paper-2 to 6 (General Studies): 250 Marks for each paper (3 Hours duration per paper).

Interview / Personality Test

Candidates who clear the written examination will be called for the Interview in a ratio of 1:3 against the total number of vacancies.

  • Maximum Marks: The Interview/Personality Test carries 180 marks.
  • Objective: The interview board assesses the candidate's personal suitability for a career in public service, focusing on mental caliber, social traits, and interest in current affairs. There are no minimum qualifying marks for the interview.

Final Merit List & Selection

A candidate's final ranking and service allotment (e.g., Assam Civil Service, Assam Police Service) will be determined solely by the marks obtained in Stage 2 (Main Examination: Written Part + Interview). The final merit list is prepared out of a grand total of 1680 marks.
